CLA 2018 Outstanding Librarians in Support of Literacy Award :: Stacey Costello Colusa Co :: John Szabo LAPL

2018 Outstanding Librarians in Support of Literacy Award
CLA Net: 6.29.2018

CLA's Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award recognizes a librarian who has demonstrated passion, excellence and dedication in support of adult literacy.

Two awards will be given out in 2018.  The Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award recipients will each receive $1,000 and will be honored at the CLA annual conference.

The award is sponsored by the Library of Congress Literacy Awards and the California Center for the Book.

2018 Award Recipients

Stacey Costello, Colusa County Free Library

Stacey Zwald Costello returned home to Colusa County after more than fifteen years in the Bay Area, where she worked as a Curatorial Assistant in the history department of the Oakland Museum of California, and later as Assistant Editor at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University.

Costello started her official tenure on the centennial anniversary of the Colusa County Free Library, and has since worked to broaden services and programming, update collections and take the library system into its second hundred years with the ability to meet the evolving needs of the community. Working with library staff, patrons, and community organizations, the library has been able to expand service hours, build collections more reflective of our community, revitalize branch locations and improve the overall health of the library.

Unfortunately, Colusa County currently has an illiteracy rate of 34%.  In just under 3 years of Costello taking the helm, she has supported the Colusa County Free Library Literacy Program in the creation of a digital literacy program, U.S. citizenship seminars, an adult learner book and conversation clubs, and the recruitment and retention of adult tutors and learners alike. In addition, Costello was awarded a grant from the California State Library for access to the Career Online High School program. In support of developing and fostering early literacy skills and a love of reading, Costello has introduced weekly family story time to all seven branch locations, as well as provided programming in Spanish and for children with special needs, supported the expansion of the Raising a Reader program and hosted Growing Start Playgroups in our most rural outposts.

Her commitment to literacy services is a reflection of her commitment to the community at large, and her belief that literacy is an integral aspect to being a productive and happy person.

John Szabo, Los Angeles Public Library

John F. Szabo is the City Librarian of the Los Angeles Public Library, which serves over four million people—the largest population of any public library in the United States.  He oversees the Central Library, 72 branches and the library’s $182 million budget.

Under his leadership, the Library’s major initiatives include those related to immigrant integration and citizenship, improving financial literacy and providing health resources and programs.  He has expanded the library’s reach into the city’s diverse communities through partnerships with several community-based organizations.

He has more than 25 years of leadership experience in public libraries, previously serving as the director of four libraries including the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System.

He currently serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of OCLC and on the Board of Directors for California Humanities and the University of Southern California Center for Library Leadership and Management.  He has previously served on the Executive Board of the Urban Libraries Council and as president of the Florida Library Association.

ProLiteracy Launches Global Literacy Hero Contest to Raise Awareness of Adult Literacy
ProLiteracy: 10.24.2018

In an effort to help the 36 million low-literate adults in the U.S., ProLiteracy, the leader in adult literacy content development, programs, and advocacy for more than 60 years, is pleased to announce the launch of the ProLiteracy Hero Contest. ProLiteracy launched the contest to raise awareness of the adult literacy crisis, and to recognize the adult education and literacy heroes worldwide!

A panel of ProLiteracy judges chose the top 10 national finalists from hundreds of stories and submissions that were sent in from around the world. The video and story submissions are posted to the ProLiteracy website and have been opened up to a public vote at www.proliteracy.org. Each week, the finalists will be narrowed down until the first-, second-, and third-place winners are selected on November 16.

“The local literacy organizations are the heroes who make adult learners’ dreams come true,” said Kevin Morgan, President and CEO of ProLiteracy. “Choosing the top ten finalists out of so many worthwhile organizations was very difficult. They all deserve to be recognized.”

Corona Library :: Steve Armstrong Literacy Award 2018

We Flippin' Love Our Volunteers!

On Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018 the City of Corona Library and Recreation Services Department held their first annual department-wide Volunteer Recognition, “We Flippin’ Love You.” Aptly named for the pancake-themed brunch, 120 attendees shared thank-yous for the 16,101 hours of volunteer time they have contributed to the organization in the past calendar year.

With the help of these volunteers, the Library and Recreation Services Department has been able to provide vital services to the community in the form of funding, program assistance, program creation, and program implementation. Volunteers are an essential component to the success of programs taking place at the Senior Center, the Library, and the Circle City Center.  Considering that last fiscal year 373,000 patrons visited the library and 183,985 patrons attended a Library and Recreation program, volunteers directly impact Corona community members.

One such volunteer, Galen Howard, received the annual Steve Armstrong Literacy Award.  The Steve Armstrong Literacy Award originated in 2009 in honor of Steve Armstrong, former Corona Public Library Support Services Division Manager from 2002-2008. Each year the Adult Reading Assistance program selects a recipient of the award who demonstrates a high level of commitment to literacy.

Huntington Beach Library :: 2018 Annual Meeting & Awards Event

2018 Annual Meeting & Awards Event

Literacy Volunteers-HBPL's 2018 Annual Meeting & Awards Event was a wonderful time with 2017-2018 President Susie Hodge, Central's Program Director Diane Moseley, and Stephanie Beverage, Library Director for Huntington Beach Public Library at the helm.

Our wonderful learners were recognized for being "Writer to Writer" challenge entrants, for earning their U.S. citizenship, for becoming graduates of the COHS (Career Online High School) and achieving outstanding learner recognition!

5-10-15 year service pins were awarded to program volunteers; thank you to all volunteers! New board members were elected, and outgoing members were recognized for their service on the board.

Warmest thanks to all who participated

July 2018
Literacy Volunteers' Authors Panel On July 12, 2018, six local authors who sometimes call themselves "The Long Beach Fiction Writers," converged at the Huntington Beach Central Library to give live readings from their books. The Literacy-sponsored event was organized by board member, activities chairperson, local author and member of the group, Barbara K. Robinson. Nancy Mary, Barbara Eknoian, Mushroom Montoya, Carol Anne Perini, and John Stacey rounded out the sextet.

The purpose of the event was to encourage would-be writers to look the fear of writing straight in the eye and WRITE! The panelists agreed that the blank page is a scary thing, but we all have a story waiting to be told. Each brought some of their books to sell, donating 30% of the day's proceeds to Literacy Volunteers.  READ MORE >>
