Los Angeles Public Library :: Proud to Host the Adult Literacy Leadership Institute

A newsletter written by students and tutors

The Los Angeles Public Library was proud to host the Adult Literacy Leadership Institute at the Central Library on May 6 and 7, 2016.  One of our learners attended a bootcamp in Ventura, so the number of attendees this year was an incredible 13.

• By learner Ethel Harris My overall experience in the Adult Learner Leadership Institute was educational.  The presentations were given by ALLI participants who have worked to improve their literacy skills and were able to transfer what they’d learned at ALLI to us.  The topics discussed were leadership qualities that I want to develop and use everywhere I go (Setting and Achieving Goals, Self Esteem, Networking, and Advocacy).  The atmosphere in the room was comfortable and the leadership group responsible for  the workshop were polite.  I didn’t have a problem writing and getting the two minute speech assignment completed.

• By learner Magdalena Guadalupe Deleon Tran My name is Magdalena.  I came to the ALLI Bootcamp from the Lincoln Heights Branch Library ALP Program.

I had an interesting time at the Bootcamp, which was held at the Central Library on May 6 and 7, 2016.

I learned about leadership and about myself. For example, I learned that a leader is a person who leads others, has high self-esteem, and who believes that they can lead.  I learned how to control my fears of speaking, since when I become afraid to speak up my voice is weak and fragile, but as I continue to speak, I become more confident and my voice returns to normal.  I also learned many meanings of words that describe feelings, like selfish, pride, and self-esteem.  I also learned some names that described behaviors: avoider, resister, accepter, and seeker.

In my opinion, ALLI should be a mandatory program given to those on Welfare so that all the people who are not in school or who can’t read anything at all could improve their handwriting and reading and get better jobs. It doesn’t matter if a person is young or old, they can lead the poor, especially those on Skid Row in Los Angeles, to have a valuable experience.

I want to thank Ms. Kelly for the invitation to the ALLI Bootcamp.  I also want to say to my sponsor that I appreciate having the opportunity to be part of the Adult Literacy Program and Algebra Upgrade.  I’m grateful for my wonderful tutor, Kate, who is so flexible about my schedule.  Thank you all for leading me.  I will lead others, too. Thank you, Ms. Kathy.

Learning is good at any time.  It’s better to learn than to never have learned.

Los Angeles Public Library :: Graduation - Career Online High School

Graduation By Brian Cunningham, project coordinator

In January the library held the inaugural ceremony in honor of our first graduates from Career Online High School. I had never met most of these students in person, so it was a treat to finally come face to face with them.

Graduate Angie Velasquez gave a beautiful speech, recounting the personal and professional growth she attributes to COHS. The career certificate she received in Office Management, in addition to her diploma, inspired her to pursue a career in Human Resources. She is currently attending Harbor College and applying what she learned in her courses to make improvements at her current place of work.

In addition to our own John Szabo, we also had a few guest speakers, including Mayor Eric Garcetti, State Librarian Greg Lucas, and Board of Library Commissioner President Bich Ngoc Cao. Each of them shared powerful and inspiring speeches; we learned that the Mayor’s grandfather had been a barber, as he referenced one of our graduates currently enrolled in barber college.

We are grateful for the generous support of the Library Foundation and the California State Library. There are currently 34 graduates and many more students are approaching the finish line. Between the press we received and the family members who were inspired to apply for the program as a result of the ceremony, I am proud to say there seems to be more interest in Career Online High School than ever before.

A New High School Graduate By literacy coordinator Janis Risch
Holly Maidens knew that she wanted to complete her GED and she found out about the LA Public Library’s Adult Literacy Program in late 2013. She hoped working with a tutor would help her to achieve that goal. She was matched with a tutor in early 2014. Her tutor helped Holly to improve her reading skills and also built up her confidence by offering ongoing encouragement. Soon after Holly started in the library’s program, the library introduced the Career Online High School (COHS) and Janis Risch, the Literacy Coordinator for the West Valley, told Holly about it. She began the COHS program in the spring of 2014 and, with her hard work and the encouragement of others, she completed her coursework and earned her high school diploma and career certificate on June 25, 2015. Holly liked the online learning environment because it allowed her to work at her own pace as her busy schedule permitted. She really liked the visible cues given by the program (checkmarks) as she progressed through the coursework. Her academic coach was ready to help her with any computer issues or questions about the lessons.

Holly is now in her third semester at Pierce College. She is taking General Education classes in preparation for transferring to California State University-Northridge where she will major in Psychology. Her long term goal is to become a social worker who works with special needs families and links them with resources.  READ MORE @

Congratulations Are in Order Congratulations to Leonard Utley, winner for his letter to Tom Gilroy, author of In Bikole: Eight Modern Stories of Life in a West African Village, and to Hyun Mi Kim, runner-up for her letter to Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.

The Writer to Writer Challenge is an annual competition for adult learners in public library literacy programs. Learners write a letter to an author of a book or magazine telling them how their lives were influenced by what they read.

The competition is sponsored by the Southern California Library Literacy Network (SCLLN), and the winners and runners-up were recognized at an awards ceremony on March 5 during the SCLLN conference. Winners in each category had an opportunity to read their letters during the ceremony, and all winners and runners-up received a copy of a book that has been published with their letters.  READ MORE @
