BASIC LITERACY
Over 10 million adults in California function at or below basic literacy levels. They may not have the skills required to be gainfully employed or economically self-sufficient. They are unlikely to have the skills, and the confidence, to engage in their children’s education or participate in community activities. Yet once they start to learn, there is no stopping them . . . and you can help them get started!

INSPIRED CITIZENSHIP
According to the U.S. Census, nearly 1-third of Azusa residents were born outside the United States. The goal of our Inspired Citizenship program is to empower our community and encourage stronger civic participation for all City of Azusa residents.

The library offers:
weekly classes
study materials
1-on-1 coaching
special information workshops to help you and your family achieve your dreams of becoming U.S. citizens

GRASSROOTS ESL
According to the U.S. Census, nearly 1-quarter of Azusa’s 46,361 residents report they speak English “less than very well.” In response, the Azusa community has joined together to provide Grassroots ESL (English as a 2nd Language) to help limited English speakers gain confidence and skill in speaking English.

HEALTH LITERACY
Health Literacy Learning is a collaboration with the Azusa Neighborhood Wellness Center and the Azusa Pacific University Department of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Health Literacy Learning classes focus on English vocabulary, grammar, conversations, and reading and writing exercises related to topics such as nutrition, exercise and preventing disease.

Two levels of classes are offered. Each is scheduled twice a week, for 8-week sessions.

Los Angeles Public Library :: Spotlight on Adult Literacy: Dreams Achieved

Spotlight on Adult Literacy: Dreams Achieved
LAPL BLOG: 4.03.2019 by Randall Hinson, Librarian, Office of Education and Literacy

Adult literacy learner Gregory Hill at the Exposition Park Branch Library

For 35 years, the Adult Literacy program at the Los Angeles Public Library has helped adults all over Los Angeles improve their reading and writing skills. Gregory Hill is one of our inspiring learners.

Gregory was passed from grade to grade throughout his elementary, middle, and high school years even though he couldn’t read or write. He graduated from high school, but was unable to fill out forms or applications, and found applying for jobs difficult. Gregory tried numerous programs and classes to improve his situation, but always found himself back where he began, unable to read or write.

Then one day, while in the Exposition Park Regional Library, Gregory saw a sign over a door that read, “Adult Literacy Center – Read, Learn, Help”. Inside, he met dedicated former literacy coordinator June Brandon, who reassured him that he was in the right place. She promised him that regardless of what happened in the past, she was going to do everything in her power to help him learn to read and write. From that day forward, Gregory was on the path to literacy—not in a school, but at his local library.  WATCH 01:36

The Corona Public Library is proud to bring awareness to the global literacy needs, including those in our own community, and we are committed to providing resources to help make a positive change.

THE SHOCKING FACTS

According to ProLiteracy, every important social issue is impacted by low literacy.
• Children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves.
• Of adults with the lowest literacy levels, 43 percent live in poverty, and 70% of adult welfare recipients have low literacy levels.
• Every year, one in six young adults—more than 1.2 million—drop out of high school.

The library’s Adult Reading Assistance Program provides free tutoring for English-speaking adults in basic reading and writing skills. Students are matched one-to-one with volunteer. Riverside County Library :: 1 in 5 Riverside County residents can't read in English. Here's what the valley is doing to help

1 in 5 Riverside County residents can't read in English. Here's what the valley is doing to help
Desert Sun: 5.03.2017 by Anna Rumer

Inside Coachella's Cardenas Market, picking up groceries is English-optional.

One hot spring afternoon, as Latin music played through the supermarket speakers, a woman picked up a mango under a sign reading "frutas," bringing it to her nose to search for the scent indicating the fruit is at the perfect ripeness.

Nearby, shoppers were lured to PanaderĆa Cardenas by fresh conchas and other kinds of pan dulce, or sweet breads, showcased in the clear display cases by the entrance.

Those standing in line to order fresh chilaquiles, a fried tortilla-based dish, and tacos de tripitas, or seasoned small intestine, from Cocina Cardenas, can be heard speaking in Spanish to one another, peppering their conversation with perhaps a word or two in English before returning to the language with which they are more comfortable.

In many parts of the majority-Latino east valley, you can easily go without needing to speak or read English. Many don’t. About 90 percent of Coachella residents don’t speak English at home, according to the U.S. Census, and 45 percent don’t speak English at all. About 20 percent of the U.S. population is estimated to be going through life not speaking any English, a designation that's fine with some of the people to which it applies, but others find that without a functional knowledge of English they have a hard time finding a well-paying job, navigating governmental bureaucracies and keeping up with the next generation.

As a whole, Riverside County is the 16th least English literate county in California, according to a 2003 estimate done by the National Center for Educational Statistics, with one fifth of its population lacking basic English prose literacy skills.

Ruth Colvin, the Mother of the Adult Literacy Movement, Turns 100 on December 16

Ruth Colvin, the Mother of the Adult Literacy Movement, Turns 100 on December 16

Colvin has dedicated more than 50 years of her life to literacy, and shows no signs of stopping.
PR Web: 12.14.2016

“To many people the word “illiteracy” prompts images of downtrodden, starving people in third world countries. But illiteracy in America? How can that be possible? Our tax money provides schooling for every child.” These thoughts were expressed by Ruth Johnson Colvin in 1960. But when Colvin saw a 1961 newspaper article on the US Census figures that noted her hometown of Syracuse, New York had over 11,000 people who could not read, she knew something needed to be done. "Not in Africa. In my city. An educational city," Colvin said. “If I don’t do something, who will?”

Her life was transformed as she undertook the necessary steps needed to help correct the situation. Colvin determined that traditional classroom methods would not work and instead focused on the development of community networks that empowered adult learners. The organization developed effective tutor training programs to teach basic literacy and English as a second language with an ongoing support system.

Colvin earned support from Syracuse’s Church Women United (CWU) organization to sponsor a local literacy tutoring effort. She recruited volunteers and set up an office in her home’s basement. Under her leadership, the literacy volunteer movement quickly spread across the United States, and the national organization, Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc., was incorporated in 1972. Ruth and her husband, Robert, also spent more than 50 years traveling the world together to provide literacy training in more than 60 countries at the invitation of ministries, governments and universities.

During her more than five decades of literacy work, Colvin has published nine books, and visited or worked in more than sixty countries. She has been the recipient of nine honorary doctorates, and in 1987 she was given the highest award for volunteerism in the United States, the President’s Volunteer Action Award from President Ronald Regan [sic]. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006 from President George W. Bush, and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1991.

In 2002, Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. merged with Laubach Literacy International to form ProLiteracy Worldwide. Colvin still serves as a lifetime member of the board of directors of ProLiteracy, is an honorary member of the board of directors of Literacy New York, and a member of the board of directors and a tutor at Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse.  READ MORE @
