Huntington Beach Library :: Family Literacy :: Oak View Celebrates Its Own

Oak View Celebrates its Own
Open Doors: September 2016

The Oak View Family & Community Center Gymnasium was filled almost to capacity Monday evening, August 22, as the Oak View literacy participants gathered to celebrate and honor learner achievements.

Huntington Beach Library Director Stephanie Beverage, City Council member Eric Peterson and Literacy Board President Susie Hodge gave brief congratulatory speeches. Excellence Awards were presented to learners who succeeded above and beyond during the past year. Twelve learners graduated from a computer class where they had learned how to send and receive emails, shop on line and do their personal banking.  Special award certificates were presented to five learners for outstanding achievement, and two were recognized for passing the citizenship test. Tutors received pins for their years served.

Amy Crepeau, Oak View Literacy director, received a surprise thank you and congratulations from tutors, learners and literacy staff. Former library staff member Kevin Moran spoke and Rocio G, a learner in the program, presented her with a bouquet of flowers and a book in recognition of her recent attainment of her Master's Degree in Library Science. Amy was extremely moved and surprised, and we extend our congratulations for her hard work and diligence in earning her degree.

Afterwards, the amiable crowd enjoyed desserts and beverages provided by literacy volunteers and learners. The positive energy, happiness and conviviality at Oak View always creates a cheerful atmosphere. If you haven't had a chance to attend one of their enjoyable events, plan to do so in the future. You'll be glad you did and will go home humming a happy tune!

Huntington Beach Library :: International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day
Open Doors: September 2016

International Literacy Day (ILD) shines a spotlight on global literacy needs, which goes hand in hand with the International Literacy Association's mission: literacy for everyone, everywhere. ILA advocates for a literate world, supports literacy educators and leaders, and celebrates the power of literacy. Founded as the International Reading Association, the International Literacy Association (ILA) has worked to enhance literacy instruction through research and professional development for 60 years. Some of its advances made for literacy include:

• Honing the skills of thousands of literacy educators through our practical research journals, publications, professional development, conferences, and advocacy efforts
• Publishing over 900 books on issues in literacy education
• Developing and managing dozens of global literacy projects across the developing world
• Building a community of educators through our network of councils and affiliate groups
• Advocating before legislative and regulatory bodies for resources to enhance students' skills
• Setting standards for educators and assessment that are now used throughout the field
• Co-producing ReadWriteThink -a widely used website resource for peer reviewed lesson plans

As the champion of a vibrant literacy community, we recognize the importance of working together to drive sustainable change and have great expectations for the next 60 years-and beyond.

Together, we are the future of literacy, and the future is now.
