Carlsbad Library :: A Celebration of Learning

A Celebration of Learning
Learning Connection: July/August 2017

Approximately 50 tutors, learners, family members and friends enjoyed Literacy Services’ annual celebration on May 21 at the Carlsbad Senior Center. This event was held to congratulate our literacy learners on their accomplishments, recognize our volunteer tutors for their outstanding dedication and thank the City for its support. The program started with a slide show of our accomplishments during the year, followed by remarks from Library Director Heather Pizzuto and Program Coordinator Carrie Scott. Tutors and learners shared what the program means to them. Guests enjoyed light refreshments and took home a gift of chocolates and a bookmark donated by Library Board Member Beth Hulsart.

During the past fiscal year, volunteers contributed 11,000 hours helping learners reach their goals, from reading an entire book for the first time to helping their children with homework. Nearly half of the learners met a job-related goal. Improved skills lead to personal success that, in turn, creates a stronger community. Currently, over 66 tutor/ learner pairs meet twice per week to work on reading and writing skills.

Library Director Heather Pizzuto paid special tribute to the program’s longest-serving volunteer, Betty Groves, who passed away in December 2016 at the age of 102.

Betty served 22 years as a tutor in the literacy program, helping over 20 adult learners and countless high school students to achieve their goals.  READ MORE @

Redlands Library :: Find Out How to Choose the Right Book at A.K. Smiley Public Library Presentation

Find out how to choose the right book during at [sic] A.K. Smiley Public Library presentation
Redlands Daily Facts: 7.08.2017 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coordinator-A.K. Smiley Library

What are your some of your favorite things to do in Redlands during the warm summers? Do you enjoy reading a book or discovering a new favorite author?

How do you choose a book to read? Selecting just the right book can be a challenge for any reader.

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program serves as a gateway for adults who want to improve their reading and writing skills so they can select and read books they will enjoy.

Recently, the Redlands Adult Literacy Program welcomed guest speaker Carrie Scott of the Carlsbad Literacy Center to its second annual tutor/learner roundtable meeting. Scott has been involved with literacy programs for 29 years and she is co-chairman of the annual adult literacy Writer-to-Writer Challenge in which a learner reads a book and writes a letter to its author.

At the roundtable meeting, more than 50 tutors and learners were eager to learn from Scott how to choose books they will enjoy.

Scott stressed the importance of picking books that are of high interest to the reader. She suggested that readers adopt the following strategies in selecting books.

Start by finding several appealing books in an interesting subject area. Hold the books and compare them side by side. Look at the cover images, and read the back cover and inside flap to get an idea of what the book is about.  READ MORE @

National City Library :: Library Helps Would-be Citizens Prep for the Big Exam

Library helps would-be citizens prep for the big exam
Star News: 7.01.2017 by Robert Moreno

The National City Public Library provides many resources for the community: from use of a computer for library members to a summer reading program that keeps students actively reading while they are out of school during summer break.

But a recent partnership with the Jewish Family Service of San Diego has put the library’s free U.S. Citizenship Classes as one of the most popular programs the library has to offer.

Two separate classes are offered, one for individuals wanting one-on-one tutoring, and another for people who prefer multi-student interaction in a classroom setting.

Currently 10 people are taking a 10-week, two-hour, twice a week citizenship class. A new session starts July 15 which is already filled to capacity. The library has their own tutors with the Jewish Family Service of San Diego also provides an instructor.

National City Library literacy coordinator Matt Boatman said the demographic of people taking citizenship classes at the National City Library are mainly Hispanic and some Filipino, reflective of the National City community.

“There’s been a very  steady demand for citizenship, for people taking a step from being legal residents to getting full citizenship,” he said “So we’re doing our best to meet that demand.” READ MORE @
