Los Angeles Public Library ▬ Learning Circles Are A New Kind Of Class For Adults

Learning Circles Are A New Kind Of Class For Adults At The Los Angeles Public Library!

READ
READ: Fall 2020

Learning circles are basically study groups for adults who want to take online courses together. The online courses can come from many places, including colleges, news-papers, YouTube, or databases on the LAPL website.

There is almost no limit to the kinds of courses you can take in a learning circle! So far, we’ve had learning circles on basic computer skills, acrylic painting, American sign language, interview skills, knitting, and much more!

Learning circles make online courses more interesting and fun, because instead of taking the class all by yourself, you take it with other people! You can make new friends and help one another learn as you study. Learning circles are as much about building a community of learners as they are about the subject being studied.

Just recently, two of our literacy coordinators, Abel and Priscilla, helped lead learning circles. Below, they tell us what it was like!

Priscilla Rojas Naiman:  Angi Brzycki, adult librarian at the Hollywood Branch, and I recently concluded a six week learning circle on the 1619 Project.

For those unfamiliar with it, the 1619 Project was a massive effort by The New York Times Magazine to detail the history of slavery, its lasting effects within our culture, and to celebrate the often-suppressed role of formerly enslaved peoples in making American democracy manifest. Its aim was to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.

The 1619 Project Learning Circle was difficult to get through but highly needed in light of today’s climate. An average of 15 people joined us each week on Zoom from all over the country. They came prepared by having read the essays the NY Times collected and heard the podcasts assigned so that the discussion would be fruitful. There were participants who came to this country not knowing that the Black community had so many trials over the centuries.  READ MORE ➤➤

Literacy Volunteers-HBPL Blog: 12 28 2020

My name is Sandra. I want to share with you how happy I am, because the literacy program has changed my life. They help me a lot to study. I have the privilege of having an excellent teacher, her name is Connie. Thanks to them and God, now I am an American citizen. By the way, I passed my test with 100%. For the first time I voted in the election for a new president. I am also learning more to speak and write. I am very happy and I am grateful for the literacy program. I highly recommend it!  READ MORE ➤➤

Literacy Volunteers - HBPL has tutor training workshops throughout the year. The 15-hour class teaches Literacy Volunteers of America methods for helping adults improve their skills. After taking the class, you are matched with one adult student. You meet two hours a week, morning, afternoon, evening or weekend.

We have two programs, the Adult Literacy Program at Central Library (714) 375-5102 and the Oak View Literacy Program at the Oak View Branch Library (714) 375-5104.

We always need tutors!

If you can read and write fluently, you can help an adult to read, write or speak English better.

Riverside County Library Literacy Services Support Adult Learning From Home

@RivCntyLib

Valley News: 1.08.2020

Approximately 32% of Riverside County residents’ ability to understand print material is considered “at-risk” according to a study by the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies. Literacy skills increase the ability to read with their children, pass a driver’s test and apply for jobs online. Riverside County Library System Literary Services offers programs and services to close the gap and positively impact these daily activities. RCLS addresses the adult literacy gap with free community classes and one-on-one tutoring available to all Riverside County residents. Due to the pandemic, literacy services and programs are now offered online using video conferencing. Chromebooks and tablets are also available for checkout by enrolled adult learners.  READ MORE ➤➤

There are a few ways to become a literacy volunteer:

Adult Literacy: As a volunteer reading/writing tutor, you are the pivotal force in the literacy program's design to enable adult learners to improve their reading, writing, digital and other crucial skills.

English Language Classes: As a volunteer English Language tutor, you are the driving force to providing free and accessible English classes to non-native English speakers that helps learners improve job readiness skills as well as better connect with the community.

Family Literacy Events: As a volunteer for Family Literacy, you are providing adult learners, potential adult learners and their families vital early literacy and parent engagement support and strategies, which is shown to increase a child’s academic and life-long success.

We believe that your decision to become a volunteer tutor will be personally rewarding. Most experienced tutors have told us they believe they have received as much from the program as their adult learners. In this endeavor, Literacy Service staff are always here to support and assist you in any way we can. Please contact us whenever necessary.
