Adult Learner Leadership Institute

Learning Connection: May/June 2015

Congratulations to learners Fidela R. and Robertina G. who graduated from the Adult Learner Leadership Institute held March 20-22. The Institute is a three-day workshop presented by adult learners to teach leadership, advocacy, self-esteem and public speaking skills. The California State Library generously funds this annual workshop, which is hosted by different libraries in Southern California.

This year’s Institute was held at the beautiful new San Diego Central Public Library in downtown San Diego. The learners received a certificate at a graduation on Sunday.

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program is assisting 80 adult learners who want to improve their reading and writing in English. Each learner meets weekly with a volunteer tutor for an hour and a half. These tutoring sessions, which are designed to help learners meet their literacy goals, take place at the A.K. Smiley Public Library or at one of the off-site programs in the community.

Recently, Ana Alcantar, a learner in the literacy program, was asked if she would be interested in applying to participate in the Adult Learner Leadership Institute, an event held March 20-22 in San Diego and sponsored by the California State Library. The conference is designed to build leadership, communication, advocacy and presentation skills for adult learners.

“At first I was surprised and I didn’t feel ready to go,” Alcantar said.

-But, she filled out an application and was one of 20 learners selected to attend the conference for the Southern California Region.

“I’m not sure what they saw in me, but it felt great,” Alcantar said. “I felt honored because they believed in me.”

After attending the conference, Alcantar returned energized with new sense of gratitude and purpose. She said she learned it was important to be a part of a team in which one can share experiences and build relationships. READ MORE !

Altadena - Let's Read

Inspiring History ­ Exciting Future

Looking back through the years the Bob Lucas Branch and Let’s Read, Altadena! have an inspiring history. After being closed for many years the Altadena Library Branch, formerly named the Arroyo Branch, was re­opened in October 1991 with a grand celebration featuring former Lakers player Michael Cooper as the Guest Speaker. Since that grand reopening many wonderful activities and programs have been presented. Credit must be given to the late Winnie Ragsdale for her leadership in getting the Literacy Program started.

Carlsbad - Learning Connection

Adult Learner Leadership Institute

The Adult Learner Leadership Institute was held on May 3 through 5 at the Cole Library. Fifteen learners attended from 6 Southern California libraries, with six learners from Carlsbad. Participants attended workshops on leadership, networking, and self-esteem. The learners also gained valuable public speaking skills. The learners’ speeches on the final day of the Institute were the highlight of the weekend’s activities. According to one learner, “I now find my-self very confident to speak in front of people due to the Institute. That is why I liked it a lot.”

Examine how to use devices such as e-readers, tablets, and smart phones in our literacy programs, answering questions such as:

The Southern California Library Literacy Network (SCLLN) was formalized in 1985.

Many adult learners at Project Read-Menlo Park, the adult literacy program in the Menlo Park Library, have gone far beyond studying English. They've become active members of the community.

For 25 years, Project Read has provided the only free adult literacy tutoring in the area, helping more than 3,000 adults.

After a 10-hour work day, would you study an additional three hours? Would you drive to Santa Clara from Menlo Park every month to practice public speaking in a language that is foreign to you? Would you give up two-days' pay, travel to a conference and present a workshop illustrating how low-level literacy students can improve their lives and give back to their communities? Project Read learners have done all of these.

Raul Gonzalez, became a Project Read tutor one year after he began as a learner. He attended the Adult Learner Leadership Institute (ALLI), which trains and motivates students to improve their public speaking skills and promotes civic engagement.

To date, 10 of Project Read's learners have graduated from Adult Learner Leadership Institute.

In October, at the California Library Association's annual conference in Pasadena, he was one of five students who presented a workshop on how adult learners can give back to their communities.

At Project Read, our volunteer tutors helped their adult learners do many things, such as reading to their children, getting a better job, or learning to surf the Web. Then, the students gave back in ways we never imagined! READ MORE !

Then the Adult Learner Leadership Institute is for you !
You must be an Adult Learner in a Southern California Library Literacy program.

In the Adult Learner Leadership Institute you will learn how to improve your communication and leadership skills. These skills will help you in your family life, at work, and in your community. We are pleased to offer the Institute at the Carlsbad City Library Learning Center.

ALLI, formerly known as the Henry Huffman Leadership Institute is a six-month leadership development program for advanced learners. ALLI students build self-esteem while acquiring public speaking skills, research techniques, and learning styles.

The training is spread over 6 sessions, with classes meeting one Saturday a month and is led, presented and facilitated by adult learners. It is a dynamic training program designed for by adult learners to improve/build self-esteem, leadership, communication, advocacy and presentation skills through practical exercises. ALLI workshops are facilitated by the previous year’s Institute graduates.

ALLI can help you train a corps of “learner leaders” who can become excellent advocates for your programs as well as serve as mentors to other learners. The Institute is a statewide training program sponsored by the California State Library. The training is spread over six sessions, with classes meeting one Saturday a month and is led, presented and facilitated by adult learners. It is a dynamic training program designed for by adult learners to improve/build self-esteem, leadership, communication, advocacy and presentation skills through practical exercises. So please, take advantage of this great training opportunity for your adult learners!

It is FREE and will include breakfast, lunch and training materials.

Woman Finds More Than Literacy Skills

Every morning, Laurie Heber wakes up and looks at a small bee figurine sitting on her dresser. The figurine includes the words “Believe in yourself,” and thanks to Hemet Adult Literacy Services, Heber said she is learning exactly how to do that.

For Heber, self-esteem is an issue. “I’m still working on building it up,” she said.

Heber graduated from the Adult Learner Leadership Institute (ALLI) in July. The program, which meets one Saturday a month for six months, teaches adult learners life skills, such as self-esteem, networking, and public speaking through practical exercises. The institute is funded by California Library Literacy Services and was developed by Henry Huffman, an adult learner in Santa Clara County in the late 1980s. Huffman completed the reading program and went on to become a tutor. He was an advocate of literacy and formed ALLI so learners could take their reading and writing skills to the next level.

Heber said the exercises helped her to improve her self-esteem, speak in front of large audiences, and become a leader in her community. One of the exercises required Heber to make a speech in front of the other participants at ALLI. “I was so scared!” Heber said. “But I felt comfortable because I knew people in the group weren’t going to laugh at me.” Her speech was about winning the statewide Writer-to-Writer competition last year.

Lori Eastman — the literacy coordinator for the adult literacy program, which is run through Hemet Public Library — said Heber wants to stay in the program so she can continue to improve.

Adult Learner Leadership Institute Graduation [ ALLI ]

24 Adult Learners from Southern California library literacy programs successfully completed the 2009 Adult Learner Leadership Institute.

11 adult learners graduated on May 30 at the Carlsbad Library Learning Center.

13 will graduate on June 13 at the Upland Public Library.

In addition to improving basic reading and writing skills, many learners are eager to take on new challenges and want to make a contribution of their own:
~ Become better role models for their families
~ Assume leadership roles at work
~ Participate in community activities and decision-making
~ Advocate for resources for adult learners

The 6-month ALLI program was founded in 2000 as the Henry Huffman Leadership Institute in memory of Henry Huffman, a dedicated learner who devoted his life to spreading awareness of literacy in the community. Graduates keep their skills active by facilitating and co-presenting sessions for new learners.

ALLI graduates build self esteem as they increase their potential to speak out effectively on community issues, and act as spokespersons for literacy causes.

Our near-capacity crowd of 141 learners, tutors, family members, and friends joined together on June 1 to celebrate a year of achievement at the Adult Learning Program.

We heard stories of hard work and accomplishments, and words of motivation from our speakers Lupe G., Ramon G., Nyla H., Diane H., and Maria W. Principal Librarian, Carol Naegele, captured the audience with her motivational story. AmeriCorps volunteer and past Library Deputy Director, Geoff Armour, honored members of the staff with his humorous limericks.

Carrie Scott, Community Outreach Supervisor for the Adult Learning Program, presented long-time tutor, Betty G. with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award requires at least 4,000 hours of volunteer service, but Betty has given far beyond this amount of time in her dedication to helping others.

Six from Carlsbad Complete Leadership Institute~ from the May/June Newsletter: Learning Connection

Graduates of the Adult Learner Leadership Institute (ALLI) were honored at a graduation ceremony on April 26 at the Carlsbad Senior Center.

The graduates included 6 Carlsbad learners Yulia A., Ramon G., Lupe G., Nyla H. Myung K., and Maria W. The two facilitators Diana H. and Vernon T. are also from Carlsbad. 50 family members and friends attended the festivities.

The six-month ALLI program was founded in 2000 as the Henry Huffman Leadership Institute in memory of Henry Huffman, a dedicated learner who devoted his life to spreading awareness of literacy in the community.

Learners who improve their basic reading and writing skills may want to take on new challenges, and make a contribution of their own to set positive examples for learners who are just beginning to acquire literacy skills.

ALLI learners build self esteem as they increase their potential to speak out effectively on community issues, and act as spokespersons for literacy causes.
