Carlsbad Library: City Council Honors Given Literacy Services

City Council Honors Given
Carlsbad City Library Literacy Services
Learning Connection: Nov/Dec 2014

On Tuesday, September 9th, the Mayor and City Council of Carlsbad presented a Proclamation to Heather Pizutto and Carrie Scott, recognizing September as Adult Literacy Awareness month in honor of the 30th anniversary of the California Library Literacy Services and our program. Nyla, a learner in Literacy Services, also spoke about her experience.

The Proclamation reads:
Whereas, the City of Carlsbad recognizes the need for educated and informed residents to meet the challenges of an increasingly technological society; and

Whereas, Carlsbad City Library Literacy Services is a proud member of the California Library Literacy Services program, and both are celebrating 30 years of changing lives for the better; and

Whereas, Literacy Services provides opportunities for adults to improve their reading, writing and computer skills to meet their life goals; and

Whereas, volunteers generously and patiently donate over 11,000 hours annually to help adults improve their skills; and

Whereas, adult learners enrolled in the Literacy Services program contribute to Carlsbad becoming a world-class city by improving their job skills, reading to their children and voting.

Now, Therefore, I, Matt Hall, Mayor of the City of Carlsbad, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby join the State of California in proclaiming the month of September 2014 as Adult Literacy Awareness Month in the City of Carlsbad and commend and congratulate all of our volunteers, learners and supporters who promote literacy in our community.

Riverside County Library :: American Dream Starts @ your library® Grant Allows California Library to Expand ESL Classes

American Dream Starts @ your library® Grant Allows California Library to Expand ESL Classes
@yourLibrary: 10.12.2014 by Steve Zalusky

A California library system is providing opportunities for patrons who wish to expand their horizons by learning English.

Through an American Dream Starts @ your library grant awarded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to the American Library Association, the Riverside County (Calif.) Library System has been able to expand ESL classes for adult learners.

In this countywide program, volunteers are working with one-on-one tutoring to help individuals learn to read and write.

In the county, which is spread over 7,200 square miles, it is estimated that there are over 50,000 people in Riverside County who are eligible for citizenship. However, there are several barriers in their way. One barrier to citizenship is being able to speak, read and write English in order to take the Citizenship Exam.

This community-based program that changes not only improves students’ lives, but also those of their families.

One of the students, Laura Serrano, a mother of two children whose first language is Spanish, said learning is English is important in order to get a good job.

“This program is very good for me, because it’s free, it’s close to my house, I have very good teachers,” she said.  READ MORE !

an annual event that was co-founded in 1989 by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. To make this week special, many schools recruit local "celebrities" to read aloud a favorite children's book to classrooms. Classrooms can also listen to a free story each day courtesy of BOOK IT! and One More Story. To fire up reading for the entire school, principals are encouraged to take one day out of the week and read from bell to bell for the Principal Challenge.

Why is literacy SO important?

English author Rumer Godden said that, “When you learn to read, you will be born again … and you will never be quite so alone again.”  Unfortunately, 32 million American adults know the isolation caused by illiteracy.  Nearly 15% of
U.S. adults cannot read, translating to more than 1 in 10.

Orange Co Library :: READ/Orange County :: Excellence in Volunteerism Award 2014

Excellence in Volunteerism Award Winner 2014
READ/Orange County

Linda Kricfalusi joined READ/Orange County’s (READ/OC) volunteer team in 2005, and over the past nine years, she has served as a literacy tutor, Friends of READ/OC Board Member and general volunteer. READ/OC provides tutoring in basic reading and writing to adult learners throughout Orange County. The Friends of READ/OC is an organization committed to the support of the literacy service of OC Public Libraries, primarily through resource development, public awareness and recognition services for volunteers and learners.

As a Friends of READ/OC Board Member, Linda assumed leadership roles as president, vice president, committee chair and treasurer. Throughout her time with the organization, she consistently stepped forward to lend a helping hand with whatever task or project required attention. One of her most admirable qualities is her knack for sensing what needs to be done, and once she identifies an issue, she quietly addresses the matter without being asked.

Linda’s signature activity has been organizing READ/OC’s largest volunteer recognition event – the Annual Family Picnic and Appreciation Celebration. Under Linda’s exceptional guidance, the picnic has blossomed into a greatly anticipated and well-attended celebration. Each year, a unique theme becomes the event’s centerpiece and is incorporated into every aspect of the program, including elaborate, hand-crafted decorations; specially designed save-the-date cards and invitations; unique set designs; and one-of-kind games. The recognition planning also requires securing donations of awesome door prizes and recruiting a team of dedicated volunteers to work the event.

Babbling Day – October 21

Babbling back to babies helps them to speak faster: Researchers prove that attentive mothers aid child development
Mothers who interact with their babies speed up their language skills
Parents who do not respond to their child's gurgling inhibit development
US researchers studied 12 mothers and their babies over a six month period
Daily Mail: 8.28.2014 by Jenny Hope

It may just sound like baby talk, but mothers who hold a ‘conversation’ with their infants are actually teaching them to speak more quickly.

Researchers found new mothers who respond enthusiastically to their baby’s babbling are helping to speed up the child’s language development

They say parental feedback is a vital process that enables mothers and babies to become mutually engaged in ‘talking’.

It enhances the ability of children to communicate – unlike cases where mums did not respond attentively.

A new study, by US academics at the University of Iowa (UI) and Indiana University, serves as evidence that speaking to infants at a very early age is vital for their development.

The authors say parents who babble back at their newborns – even if they don’t understand what they’re trying to say – are a key part of the process. READ MORE !

National Day of Writing – October 20

National Day of Writing – October 20

Top 5 Infographics of the Week: The Importance of Writing

It's something you do everyday, yet you probably take it for granted. In fact, your day depends on it. Writing and reading are some of the most fundamental skills in our lives and it is especially crucial to students and those in the workforce. Studies have shown that workers spend an average of 2.6 hours per day reading and responding to emails.

That adds up to about 27 days per year! Reading and writing is clearly a big part of our life, yet literacy rates have been stagnant in the US for the past 10 years. Currently 32 million adults in the US cannot read, and it isn't showing any signs of improving. So today we're showing some infographics about the importance of writing, whether it be offering tips about note-taking, getting kids more engaged with books, or tackling the decline in literacy in America. Take a moment out of your day and just read.

#1: Write It Down by Course Hero
•Does note talking really help? According to a Professor at Cornell, after 20 minutes we forget 47% of what we learned. After 1 day, it increases to 62%, and after 78 days it jumps to 78%.
•Taking notes by hand combats forgetfulness by nearly 80%.
•Despite the benefits of note taking, only 65.5% of students take notes during class.  READ MORE !
