Huntington Beach Library :: My Summer Adventure

My Summer Adventure
Literacy Volunteers-HBPL Blog: 8.31.2018 by Michelle Wang

My family moved to the United States five years ago when I was a freshman in high school. Last summer I went back to China for a two month vacation. I looked forward to seeing my family and friends. I especially looked forward to having “real Chinese food!”

Getting to China was so exciting. This is the first time I traveled by myself. Once I got through security I was on my own. I took care of my luggage on my own. When I got to Beijing I had to change planes all by myself. Finally I met my Aunt in my hometown. (I’m not telling you its name because you probably couldn’t say it.)  I felt so proud of myself for getting there on my own.

I found my city had changed a lot. There were better and fancier shopping malls, like South Coast Plaza. I had a lot of fun with my friends going to the shopping mall. Another thing that had changed was my middle school. They had totally rebuilt my school and now it looks really different. I couldn’t go visit because it was summertime and the school was closed.  READ MORE >>

Los Angeles Public Library :: September Spotlight on Adult Literacy

September Spotlight on Adult Literacy
LAPL Blog: 9.21.2018 by Kelly Tyler, Senior Librarian, Lifelong Learning

September is National Literacy Month and we want to thank all of our volunteers for the amazing and selfless work they do in support of adult literacy. Every day, all across Los Angeles, they take time out of their busy lives to help other Angelenos learn to read.

While the adult literacy program has many different resources, from self-study tools like Cell-Ed and group conversation classes for English language learners, the foundation of our program is the special relationship between a tutor and learner in one-on-one tutoring. Meeting twice a week over months or years, our pairs develop a mutually rewarding bond that allows adult learners to succeed in their literacy pursuits.

The story of Carmen and Lorena is a perfect example of this bond. In their own words, they tell us about their experience:

My name is Lorena Lordanic, I am 25 years old, and a proud adult literacy tutor. I have had the pleasure of being an adult literacy tutor for an entire year. Last February 2017, I was looking for a way to give my time in order to help someone else.

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Carmen Chavez. I'm 67 years old. I'm unemployed now, and I decided to join the adult literacy program at Wilmington Branch Library because I want to get a better job.  READ MORE >>

Carlsbad Library :: Career Online High School Scholarships Are Available!

Career Online High School Scholarships Are Available!
Learning Connection: Sep/Oct 2018

Carlsbad City Library is excited to offer the Career Online High School (COHS) program from Gale Cengage! It is a fully accredited program that allows adults to complete their high school diploma, while also developing career skills in a field of their choice. It’s flexible and convenient, because students can work at their own pace and around their individual schedules.

How do I qualify?
You must be at least 19 years of age or older and have not completed high school.

Is there any cost? How can I get a scholarship?
We award tuition scholarships to applicants on a limited basis. You must first complete a self assessment and a prerequisite course online, then attend an in-person interview at the Library Learning Center to make sure you are a good fit for the program.

What happens after the interview?
Once you have been awarded a scholarship, you will enroll in the high school diploma and career certificate program. Upon completion, you will be invited to participate in the COHS graduation ceremony!

What are the subjects?
English, Mathematics, Social
Studies and Science. Career certificates can be earned in one of ten fields.

How long does it take?
The time limit to complete COHS is 18 months, but you may be able to complete the program in less time, if you transfer credits from existing high school transcripts.

Do I get a high school diploma?
Do I get a career certificate?
Yes! Upon completion of COHS, you will be awarded an accredited high school diploma AND a career certificate.

What if I don’t have a computer?
Carlsbad Library offers free computer use at all three sites with your Carlsbad City Library card.

COHS is not limited to learners in our literacy program, so if you know anyone in the community who would like to earn their diploma, please send them our way!

Get started by completing a brief online self-assessment at gale.com/cadiploma.
If you’d like more information, please ask a Literacy staff member.  READ MORE >>

Huntington Beach Library :: 2018 Annual Meeting & Awards Event

2018 Annual Meeting & Awards Event

Literacy Volunteers-HBPL's 2018 Annual Meeting & Awards Event was a wonderful time with 2017-2018 President Susie Hodge, Central's Program Director Diane Moseley, and Stephanie Beverage, Library Director for Huntington Beach Public Library at the helm.

Our wonderful learners were recognized for being "Writer to Writer" challenge entrants, for earning their U.S. citizenship, for becoming graduates of the COHS (Career Online High School) and achieving outstanding learner recognition!

5-10-15 year service pins were awarded to program volunteers; thank you to all volunteers! New board members were elected, and outgoing members were recognized for their service on the board.

Warmest thanks to all who participated

July 2018
Literacy Volunteers' Authors Panel On July 12, 2018, six local authors who sometimes call themselves "The Long Beach Fiction Writers," converged at the Huntington Beach Central Library to give live readings from their books. The Literacy-sponsored event was organized by board member, activities chairperson, local author and member of the group, Barbara K. Robinson. Nancy Mary, Barbara Eknoian, Mushroom Montoya, Carol Anne Perini, and John Stacey rounded out the sextet.

The purpose of the event was to encourage would-be writers to look the fear of writing straight in the eye and WRITE! The panelists agreed that the blank page is a scary thing, but we all have a story waiting to be told. Each brought some of their books to sell, donating 30% of the day's proceeds to Literacy Volunteers.  READ MORE >>
