Using Your Cell Phone for Instruction ◯ ProLiteracy

Using Your Cell Phone for Instruction
ProLiteracy Blog: 4.02.2020 by Jessica Gilmour

ProLiteracy has an excellent list of resources you can use with students during this period of social/physical distancing including instructional resources and tools. Let’s talk about some of those resources and tools. Let’s start with a tool that you and your students all most likely have—a cell phone.

If you’re working with ESL students, one of the easiest ways to use a cell phone is to set up regularly scheduled calls where you can talk with students and they can practice their conversational English. Aim for at least a 10 minute conversation two times a week. Before you end your call, determine what you will talk about for the next call so the student has a chance to think about what he or she wants to say and can practice the relevant grammar and vocabulary. If you need topics, I suggest using current events topics from News for You. News for You Online is providing the courtesy password 22667F through June 30, 2020, so anyone can access News for You Online.

If you want to have a phone call with more than one student at the same time, you can google “How to make a conference call on my [insert whatever phone you have].” Though the instructions are different for each phone, they are all straightforward and easy to find. READ MORE ➤➤

10 Lesser Known iPad Apps To Learn English Language ◯ ebookfriendly

10 Lesser Known iPad Apps To Learn English Language
ebookfriendly: 2.25.2020 by Piotr Kowlczyk

Are you determined to improve your English speaking and writing skills?

Check out these helpful but lesser-known iPad and iPhone apps:

Recommended iPad apps to learn English

eGrammar – the best way to practice English tenses
eJoy – advanced video-based app for learning English
Oxford English Grammar – grammar rules in one place
Hello – learn English from your mother tongue
ABA English – the most advanced way to learn English

Instead of popular language learning iPad and iPhone apps, find in this list only the one that are most helpful to master English language at every level.

You can find several English learning courses online (and some of them are free, at least to a certain extent), but why sit at the computer every time you have a few spare minutes for personal development?

Your iPad and iPhone can be a great companion in your determination to improve your English, no matter what level you are currently at.

The thing is that most round-ups of language learning apps for iOS include the ones that help learn multiple languages, and English is only one of them. Most of these apps are addressed to native English speakers who would like to learn or master a new language.

Instead of featuring popular language learning apps you already know about, such as Duolingo or apps offered by British Council or BBC, we’ve focused on lesser-known apps that don’t appear on the top of search results in the App Store.

Many of the apps that are featured in other roundups have not been updated for a long time. We list only the ones that were added or updated in recent months. They are compatible with the latest version of iOS, and use the latest language learning technology.  READ MORE ➤➤

English Language Learning Expert Robert Bouton McDougal Opens Free Adult Literacy Classes in Costa Mesa, CA
EIN News: 9.23.2019

The Robert McDougal English Language Institute is proud to announce the launch of a free series of ESL classes at the new library in Costa Mesa, CA. The classes will be offered to non-native English speakers and other community members free of charge beginning in the fall of 2019.

Classes will cover everyday English language essentials. Students will be expected to attend every class, as small group and paired work will be key to the course series. While courses will be focused primarily on everyday conversation, breakout seminars will cover public speaking, technology, manners and etiquette, emergency/crisis situations, confidence, nonverbal communication, pop culture terminology, and one “wild card” area of focus selected by the group of students.

“There are many English language learners in Costa Mesa,” Robert McDougal shares of the growing need for low-cost ESL classes in the area. “Additionally, Southern California is home to a diverse population, including immigrants and many low-income individuals and families. These courses will help community members learn together in a safe, supportive, and fun environment from qualified ESL instructors who have years of education and experience under their belt.”

The new Costa Mesa/Donald Dungan Library opened in May 2019, after the old Costa Mesa Technology Library closed. The new location, says McDougal, is in many ways the ideal spot for the new program.

“Libraries are essential to public health, education, community spirit, and well-being,” Robert Bouton McDougal says. “The new library in Costa Mesa is the perfect example of a community coming together around valuable free and low-cost resources. My team of ESL instructors is so proud to bring this service to the community.”

Robert Bouton McDougal is an experienced ESL instructor who has developed ELL/ESL curriculum for a number of schools and learning centers over the course of his decade of English language instruction. McDougal boasts both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in ESL pedagogy. He has worked with students of all ages as a classroom instructor, small group teacher, and private tutor to achieve their full potential in English fluency, confidence, and public speaking. Robert McDougal is also certified in TESOL instruction.

Robert Bouton McDougal will be delivering the classes with six other instructors beginning in October 2019. Interested participants ages 18 and over can sign up for classes now by heading to the form available at the Robert McDougal English Language Institute website. A similar series for non-native English speaking children and teens will be offered at the library in the spring.

Los Angeles Public Library :: Spotlight on Literacy: A Dream Come True

Spotlight on Literacy: A Dream Come True
LAPL Blog: 7.31.2019 by Luisa Latham, Adult Literacy Tutor
Randall Hinson, Librarian, Office of Education and Literacy

Last July, three students began a journey toward literacy via Leamos, a computer-based literacy program, at the Pacoima Branch Library. Leamos teaches Spanish speaking adults, who may not have had the opportunity for formative education, to begin working toward competency in reading and writing in their native language. It also equips them with basic computer skills. It can serve as a pre-ESL(English as a Second Language) course as well.

Nine months after beginning their study, two dedicated and hardworking students have stayed the course and continued their journey toward literacy. Ana Teresa Batrez and Silvia Barahona Garcia come to the library each Monday for two hours to reinforce and extend their reading and writing skills. To date, they have succeeded in reading a wide variety of texts including children’s books, newspaper headlines, employment applications, food and prescription labels, crossword puzzle clues, horoscopes, riddles and the reflections of previous students who completed Leamos.  READ MORE >>

BASIC LITERACY
Over 10 million adults in California function at or below basic literacy levels. They may not have the skills required to be gainfully employed or economically self-sufficient. They are unlikely to have the skills, and the confidence, to engage in their children’s education or participate in community activities. Yet once they start to learn, there is no stopping them . . . and you can help them get started!

INSPIRED CITIZENSHIP
According to the U.S. Census, nearly 1-third of Azusa residents were born outside the United States. The goal of our Inspired Citizenship program is to empower our community and encourage stronger civic participation for all City of Azusa residents.

The library offers:
weekly classes
study materials
1-on-1 coaching
special information workshops to help you and your family achieve your dreams of becoming U.S. citizens

GRASSROOTS ESL
According to the U.S. Census, nearly 1-quarter of Azusa’s 46,361 residents report they speak English “less than very well.” In response, the Azusa community has joined together to provide Grassroots ESL (English as a 2nd Language) to help limited English speakers gain confidence and skill in speaking English.

HEALTH LITERACY
Health Literacy Learning is a collaboration with the Azusa Neighborhood Wellness Center and the Azusa Pacific University Department of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Health Literacy Learning classes focus on English vocabulary, grammar, conversations, and reading and writing exercises related to topics such as nutrition, exercise and preventing disease.

Two levels of classes are offered. Each is scheduled twice a week, for 8-week sessions.

Placentia Library :: Spotlight On Literacy

SPOTLIGHT ON LITERACY: Meet Our Learners & Tutors

Sumi is a prolific reader from South Korea. Her love of literature lead her to sign up for the adult literacy program. Her goal is to improve her English to be able to read classic literature. We are working towards achieving this goal by reading simplified versions of classic novels, learning new words, and completing engaging lessons on reading and writing.

In Sumi’s words, “Thank you for the Placentia Library’s adult literacy program that gave me the pleasure of learning English with such a great teacher. The literacy program has had a big impact on my life.” Sumi is tutored by Raul, a recent graduate from CSUF. Raul combines his education and skills to help Sumi build her reading and writing skills. They meet every week for an hour and a half.

In Raul’s own words, “The Placentia Literacy Program has helped me develop into a better teacher so that I can be successful in my career as an ESL instructor and has given me a way to be more connected and involved in my community.”  READ MORE >>

In addition, the Claremont College students offer English-As-A-Second-Language tutoring.  Lastly, college students take Asian American Studies classes alongside LAMP students that involve social autobiography and other forms of critical pedagogies.  Co-taught with artist/educator/activist Traci Kato-Kiriyama, a spring 2011 combined class created poetry, an anthology, and a web site.

The college students and LAMP learners distributed over 60 free copies of their anthology and gave a reading at a public presentation with over 100 people in attendance.

Carlsbad Library :: Library Learning Center 10-Year Anniversary

Library Learning Center 10-Year Anniversary

The City of Carlsbad is proud to announce the 10-year anniversary of its Library Learning Center on Aug. 23, 2018. The Library Learning Center is located at 3368 Eureka Place. Services and programs are free.

The Library Learning Center was the third library to open its doors in Carlsbad and serves nearly 5,000 children, teens and adults each month.
The Library Learning Center features a Spanish, English and bilingual library collection for all ages.

The Library Learning Center offers an average of nearly 30 free programs in both English and Spanish each month, including story times, homework help, concerts and a Spanish-language book club.

Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Library Learning Center is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

“The Library Learning Center is integral to the city’s mission to provide community members of all ages with convenient access to high quality resources and services to enrich their lives,” said Heather Pizzuto, Library & Cultural Arts Director. “Over the past 10 years, we’ve heard countless success stories of how the Learning Center’s programs are making a difference for Carlsbad residents.”

The Library Learning Center offers specialized education programs, such as the Early Literacy Program, where school-age children meet with their parent or caregiver and a volunteer tutor to strengthen reading skills. Currently 10 student-parent teams are working with volunteer tutors.

“One of our young students who participated in the Early Literacy Program improved his reading assessment scores by 60 percent,” said Pizzuto. “In addition to his scholastic improvement, his parents shared that the program helped him gain confidence and make new friends at school.”

Adult programs are also available. Each year in Literacy Services, approximately 100 adults meet one-to-one with a volunteer tutor to improve their reading and writing skills. Past participants have used the program to help them read to their children, read medicine labels and apply for college or new job. All program participants report they have met at least one of their reading or writing goals after working with a volunteer tutor.  READ MORE >>
